Athletes start the 180 km bike section in the small village Stara Fužina and ride along the Sava Bohinjka River before entering the first climb to the Pokljuka plateau (720 m elevation gain). The road slowly zig-zags its way through the vast spruce tree forests before descending towards the home of Slovenian mining and iron making industries, Jesenice. The athletes pass through the touristy town of Kranjska Gora where the annual Alpine Skiing World Cup takes place. A gentle ascent from Jesenice to Kranjska Gora is followed by an intense push towards the top of the 1611 m high Vršič mountain pass (820 m elevation gain), which connects the Sava and Soča valleys by a road build by Russian prisoners during World War 1 (Russian Road). The steep ascent is followed by a long descent through the Soča valley, right next to the rejuvenating fresh Soča River through the towns Trenta and Bovec. The ascent to Vršič is known by its 24 granite cobblestone paved hairpin turns, while the descent has 26 hairpin turns. From Bovec the bike course continues its way towards Kobarid where it ‘’makes a bow’’ towards Staro Selo and Tolmin and finishes in the village Kamno.

In case of bad weather conditions, we highly recommend the use of bright clothes to increase your visibility in traffic. Regardless of the weather conditions, it is mandatory to use a back red light during the entire bike leg.

Section length: 180 km, Ascent: 2700 m
